Volkswagen Up to return in 2027 as low-cost EV
Volkswagen on Thursday held out the prospect of launching an entry- position electric vehicle by 2027, with VW brand principal Thomas Schaefer saying the company would decide in coming weeks which model to move forward with.
Four design brigades are presently working on proffers for the vehicle, which has the working titleID.1, Schaefer said at a group donation, where a representative vehicle was on display. Slides from a donation indicated the vehicle could be ready by 2027.
The company plans to launch 11 new electric vehicles from the Volkswagen brand over the coming three times, including theID.2 blazoned for 2026 at a price of around 25,000 euros and models developed concertedly with Chinese manufacturer Xpeng for the Chinese request.
VW Group Chief Executive Oliver Blume said on Wednesday that a decision on an entry- position model for around 20,000 euros would be made this time.” We’re working conceptually on a result and aren’t ruling out hookups in this area,” he said.
The carmaker, which has embarked on a 10 billion euro cost- cutting drive at its namesake brand, also said on Thursday that closer cooperation led to an 80 increase in operating profit for its core mass- request brands last time.
The group including Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Skoda and SEAT/ CUPRA posted an operating profit of7.3 billion euros($7.99 billion), substantially due to advanced unit deals.
” Through close cooperation between our brands, we’re working more efficiently, getting more competitive and boosting our ingeniousness for our guests worldwide,” said Schaefer.
Affiliated goods from the near cooperation should bolster results this time, said the German carmaker, which also expects further deals due to an bettered force of raw accoutrements and factors.
Asked by Autocar whether the Up’s relief can be produced profitably, Grünitz suggested that it might not need to induce huge perimeters in its own right but could rather serve as a ‘ loss leader ’ by introducing youngish druggies to the VW EV line- up.
“ Should it be a vehicle that’s profitable on its own, or should we look for a vehicle that might be for first druggies? I started with a Polo when I was 18 times old, I got in touch with the VW family, jumped into a Golf and noway left the Volkswagen family,” Grünitz said.” It’s really important to have a vehicle for first- auto druggies.”
“ There is also the possibility to earn plutocrat with more precious buses , ” he said, suggesting perimeters from larger buses could be sufficient to support product of a less profitable model.
In response to recent reports that Volkswagen could mate with Renault to develop the new cheap EV, Grünitz would only go so far as to say it remained a possibility.
“ We are looking at several different ways doing it on our own, doing it with( Volkswagen Group stock brands) Cupra and Skoda, doing it with external mates. Everything has advantages or disadvantages, and in the end we will see where we are at.
” Nor has it been decided whether there will be stock performances of the small EV, as is the case for the ID 2, which is technically identical to the Cupra Raval and an as- yet-unnamed Skoda model.
